A look at history
Ice hockey has a long tradition in Frankfurt, dating back to the 1930s. In 1959, Eintracht Frankfurt founded an ice hockey division, which was later replaced by the Frankfurter ESC "Die Löwen." With the establishment of the DEL in 1994, the Frankfurt Lions GmbH was created, but it filed for bankruptcy in 2010. From the core team of the Lions, the Löwen Frankfurt were formed, initially starting as an amateur team in the Regionalliga, and under head coach Andrej Jaufmann, they achieved promotion to the Oberliga.
On the sports side, the Löwen made history: in 2013, they achieved promotion to the DEL2, and in 2017, they were crowned champions there. Under coach Matti Tiilikainen, they established themselves as a top team, reaching the finals in 2019 and winning several regular season titles. In 2022, they earned promotion to the DEL by winning the DEL2 title.
Today, the Löwen represent ice hockey in Frankfurt with 40 fan clubs and a passionate fanbase, continuing to write their success story.
